AI music generator
An AI music generator built for your film
Describe the music and Root writes and plays it: a song with sung lyrics, or an instrumental score. Every track is $0.16 whatever its length, up to 3 minutes, and it is saved to your project with your shots, ready for the timeline.

What a track costs
One price per track, whatever its length. 100 credits is $1.
| Track | Length you ask for | Price |
|---|---|---|
| A short cue | 30 seconds | $0.16 |
| The default length | 1 minute | $0.16 |
| The longest track | 3 minutes | $0.16 |
The length is a request: the track comes back close to it, not to the second. Trim it to the cut on the timeline.
What you can ask for
| Setting | What it does | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Description | The style: genre, instruments, tempo, mood and the kind of voice. | 2,000 characters |
| Lyrics | The words to sing, with [Verse] and [Chorus] on their own lines. Leave it empty and the model writes its own. | 5,000 characters |
| Instrumental | No singing at all. The lyrics are not used. | On or off |
| Length | How long the track should be. It starts at 1 minute. | 30 seconds, 1, 2 or 3 minutes |
What to write in the description
Tempo, instruments and the voice change the result most. Be specific: a list of plain facts beats a feeling.
- “Warm female vocal, 90 beats per minute, acoustic guitar and brushed drums, nostalgic.”
- “Instrumental film score, slow strings and low piano, builds to a full orchestra at the end, hopeful.”
- “Tense underscore for a chase at night: pulsing synth bass, ticking percussion, 140 beats per minute, no melody.”
- “Upbeat background music for a product video: bright ukulele, hand claps, light and friendly.”
- Describe the sound, not a person: a prompt that names a real artist or song is turned down.
How to make a track in Root
- Open your project. Open Voice/Music from the project sidebar, or add a Music node to the project's graph.
- Describe the track. Write the style, add the lyrics or tick Instrumental, and choose a length.
- Press Compose. The button shows the price: 16 credits ($0.16) a track. The finished track lands in the Music section of the project's Assets.
- Put it under your shots. Drag it onto the timeline's audio track, trim it and set its level, or wire the Music node into a Lipsync node to make a singer mouth the words.
Scoring a film or a video
Root makes music to sit under pictures. The track is saved in the same project as the shots, so you can hear a cue against the cut and make another if it doesn't fit.
Pick the length closest to the scene and trim it on the timeline, ask for an instrumental for anything with dialogue over it, and say where the music should build or drop. A timeline holds up to 20 audio clips, each with its own level, and exporting the cut is free.

AI music questions
How much does Root's AI music generator cost?
$0.16 a track (16 credits), whatever its length, up to 3 minutes. You pay from your Root credit balance, and the price shows before you press Compose.
How long can an AI-generated song be?
Up to 3 minutes. You choose 30 seconds, 1, 2 or 3 minutes, and it starts at 1 minute. The length is a request, so the track comes back close to it rather than exact.
Can it make songs with vocals and lyrics?
Yes. Type the lyrics and mark the parts with [Verse] and [Chorus] on their own lines, and the song follows that structure. Leave the lyrics empty and the model writes its own words, or tick Instrumental for no singing at all.
What won't the music generator make?
It turns down a description that names a real artist or an existing song, or uses explicit words. Describe the era, the instruments and the feel instead. If a prompt is turned down, the credits held for it are returned.
Can I use the music in my film?
Yes. Root's terms say that, between you and Root, what you make is yours, and Root claims no ownership of it. The terms do not promise that a track is free of anyone else's rights, so check it before a release. Every track also carries an inaudible mark that identifies it as machine-made.
Can I make music by API or from Claude?
No. Music runs in the Root app only, from the Voice/Music page or a Music node in your project's graph.
Can I try the music generator for free?
For a month, yes. The first month of Root's Beginner plan is free and comes with 650 credits, enough for 40 tracks. After that the plan is $9 a month, and you can cancel whenever you like.
