GPT Image 2 and 2.5 API and pricing

GPT Image 2 and GPT Image 2.5 are OpenAI's image models, known for sharp text and close instruction following. On Root you can run them from the API, from the web app, or from Claude and ChatGPT, and pay from one balance. A 1K image with GPT Image 2.5 Flare costs $0.07.

GPT Image pricing

What one square image costs on Root at each size, in dollars; 100 credits is $1. Square is the most expensive shape: wider and taller images cost less. Reference images and long prompts add a little.

Model1K2K4K
GPT Image 2$0.25$0.50$0.82
GPT Image 2.5 Flare$0.07$0.13$0.21
GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst$0.07$0.13$0.21

4K is experimental on every GPT Image model. The API and the app both show the price before you run it. Use your own OpenAI key in Root and those images cost nothing here. Compare every model

Every image lands in your project, where it can be the first frame of a video shot or a reference for the next image.

The GPT Image API on Root

Make an API key in Root under Settings, then API. You choose a daily spending limit for each key when you create it. Then send a request:

curl https://root.film/api/v1/generations \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer rfk_your_key" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"model":"gpt-image-2.5-flare","project_id":"YOUR_PROJECT_ID",
"input":{"prompt":"a film festival poster that reads THE LAST REEL",
                "resolution":"1K"}}'
  • The other model ids are gpt-image-2 and gpt-image-2.5-sunburst.
  • Add reference images with reference_urls, or reuse files already in the project by id.
  • You can also ask for images from Claude or ChatGPT. How to connect

GPT Image questions

How much does GPT Image 2 cost?

On Root, a square GPT Image 2 image costs $0.25 at 1K and $0.50 at 2K. GPT Image 2.5 Flare and Sunburst each cost $0.07 at 1K. Wider images cost less, and reference images and long prompts add a little. The price is shown before you run it.

Is there a GPT Image 2 API on Root?

Yes. Create an API key in Root and send the model id gpt-image-2, gpt-image-2.5-flare or gpt-image-2.5-sunburst to the generations endpoint with a prompt and a project. The image is saved to that project.

What's the difference between GPT Image 2 and 2.5?

GPT Image 2.5 comes in two versions. Flare is for everyday images, and Sunburst is for edits where everything you didn't ask to change has to stay the same. Both cost less than GPT Image 2 on Root.

How many reference images can GPT Image use?

Up to 8 in one run. Use them to keep a character, a product or a layout the same, or to combine several images into one.

Can I use my own OpenAI key?

Yes. Add your OpenAI key in Root and every GPT Image model runs on it, and Root charges nothing for those images.

Can I use GPT Image from Claude or ChatGPT?

Yes. Connect Root to Claude or ChatGPT and ask for an image in the chat. It's priced and saved to your project the same way as an image made in the app.

Can I try GPT Image for free?

For a month, yes. The first month of Root's Beginner plan is free and comes with 650 credits, enough for 92 square 1K images with GPT Image 2.5 Flare. After that the plan is $9 a month, and you can cancel whenever you like.
