Upscale an image with AI
Root upscales images with Topaz, two or four times larger in the Root app. It also runs by API, and from Claude and ChatGPT, at its default size. You pay by the size of the finished image: $0.10 for a result up to 24 megapixels, and the bigger image is saved as a new take next to the original.

AI image upscaler questions
How much does AI image upscaling cost on Root?
$0.10 an image when the finished image is up to 24 megapixels. Bigger results cost more, up to $1.57 for the largest. The price is shown before you run it.
How much bigger can it make an image?
In the Root app you pick 2x or 4x: a 1024 × 1024 image becomes 2048 × 2048 or 4096 × 4096.
Can I upscale an image I didn't make in Root?
Yes. Upload it to a project and upscale it the same way as an image you made there.
Is the price for the image I start with or the one I get?
The one you get. The price steps up with the size of the finished image, so a 4x upscale of a large image costs more than a 2x upscale of a small one.
Can I upscale from Claude, ChatGPT or by API?
Yes. The Topaz image upscaler runs in the Root app, by API, and from Claude and ChatGPT. Give it the image to upscale and it saves the bigger version to your project. Outside the app you cannot choose 2x or 4x: it runs at its default size.
Can Root upscale video too?
Yes. Topaz video upscaling works on clips, priced by the seconds and size of the finished clip. See the AI video upscaler guide.
Can I try the AI image upscaler for free?
For a month, yes. The first month of Root's Beginner plan is free and comes with 650 credits, enough for 65 upscales to 24 megapixels or less. After that the plan is $9 a month, and you can cancel whenever you like.
