The reference image counts include the image you are editing. With GPT Image, each image you give it adds a little to the price; the price shown before you run includes it.
Tools that fix one part
Paint a mask over the part to change. Everything outside the mask stays as it was.

For FLUX Erase (cleanup), “up to” is the most an image of up to 4 megapixels costs. A larger source image costs more.
How to edit an image in Root
- Bring in the image. Upload it to a project, or use an image you already made there.
- Choose the kind of edit. To change the whole image, wire it into an Image Gen node with an edit model. To fix one part, open it in the Edit Image node and paint a mask.
- Say what changes. Write the change, and what has to stay. For a masked fill, describe only what goes inside the mask.
- Check the price and run. The price shows before you run it. The result is saved as a new take, so you can compare it with the original.
Tips for edits that keep what you want
- Make one change at a time. Two small edits are easier to control than one big one.
- Name what must not change: the face, the logo, the background.
- Add a reference image for anything that has to match, rather than describing it.
- To change words in a picture, quote the new words exactly.

How do I edit an image with AI?

Can I remove an object from a photo?
Yes. Paint over the object and run FLUX Erase (cleanup): it removes it and fills in the background behind it, with no prompt needed. It is up to $0.06 for an image of up to 4 megapixels, and a larger image costs more.
How do I keep a face or a product the same while I edit?
Say what must stay as well as what changes ("keep her face and the background"), and add reference images of the face or product. Seedream 5.0 Lite, Seedream 4.5 and Seedream 4.0 take the most, up to 14 in one run. GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst is made for edits that keep everything you didn't ask to change.
Can I edit images by API or from Claude and ChatGPT?
Yes. The edit models run in the Root app, by API, and from Claude and ChatGPT: send the image to change as the source image. The mask tools work there too, but you send the picture as a reference image and a mask you already have as a mask file. Painting the mask is done in the Root app.
Can AI make my image bigger and sharper?
Yes. That is an upscale rather than an edit: in the Root app, the image upscaler makes the image two or four times larger. See the AI image upscaler guide.
