AI product photography

AI product photography from your own photos

Photograph your product once, plainly, then put it anywhere: on a kitchen counter, a beach, a studio sweep. On Root, the image models below take your product photos as references, from $0.04 an image, and each image is saved to your project.

Image models that take product photos

How many product photos each model takes, the sizes it makes, and what one square image costs at its smallest and largest size, in dollars. 100 credits is $1.

A dash means the model makes one size. The GPT Image 2, GPT Image 2.5 Flare, GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst and Seedream 5.0 Pro prices are for an image with no photos given; each photo you give them can add to the price, and the price shown before you run includes it.

How to make product photos in Root

  1. Shoot clean reference photos. Each angle of the product on a plain background, in even light, with a sharp close-up of the label. A phone is enough. Upload them to a project.
  2. Set up an Image Gen node. Connect the photos to it as references, then pick the model and the shape for where the picture will go: square for a shop grid, wide for a banner, tall for a phone screen.
  3. Write the set and the light. Say where the product stands, what is around it and where the light comes from: “on pale travertine, soft window light from the left, a sprig of rosemary beside it, shot from slightly above”.
  4. Make the set, then check every detail. Run the shots you need, one prompt per angle or scene, with the same reference photos. Look at the label and logo at full size before you use an image.

Changing the background of a product photo

Already have a good photo? Keep the product and change what is around it.

  • With an edit model: give it the photo and say what changes and what stays, “put it on a stone counter in morning light, keep the bottle and label exactly as they are”.
  • With a mask: open the photo in the Edit Image node, paint over the background and describe the new one. FLUX.1 Fill (inpaint) is $0.06 at any size. Only the painted part is redrawn to your prompt.
  • To take out a stray object, such as a cable or a price sticker, paint over it and use FLUX Erase (cleanup): no prompt needed.
  • The AI image editing guide has the price of every edit model and mask tool.

Product photography questions

How does AI product photography work?

Give an image model one or more photos of your product and describe the picture you want: the set, the light, the angle. The model keeps the product and builds the scene around it. On Root, an image starts at $0.04 with Seedream 4.0, and every price shows before you run it.

How many product photos can an image model take?

It depends on the model; the table above gives each one. Seedream 5.0 Lite, Seedream 4.5 and Seedream 4.0 take the most, up to 14 in one image. A few clear angles and a close-up of the label are a good start. Use the same set for every image of that product.

Can AI change the background of a product photo?

Yes, in the two ways shown above: tell an edit model what the new background is, or paint over it in the Edit Image node. GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst edits one photo at 1K for up to $0.11; FLUX.1 Fill (inpaint) is $0.06 at any size.

Which AI makes product photos in 4K?

Of the models above, GPT Image 2, GPT Image 2.5 Flare, GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, Seedream 5.0 Lite, Seedream 4.5 and Seedream 4.0 make 4K images. A square 4K image starts at $0.04, with Seedream 4.0. Use 4K for print and large banners; a smaller size is enough for a web page and costs the same or less.

Can I make product photos in several shapes?

Yes. Every model above makes 1:1, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3 and 3:4, and some also make 3:2, 2:3 and 21:9. Pick the shape in the Image Gen node before you run it, and make each shape as its own image rather than cropping one.

Can I make product photos by API or from Claude?

Yes. These image models run in the Root app, by API, and from Claude and ChatGPT. By API, put the photos' addresses in reference_urls and describe the scene in the prompt; from Claude or ChatGPT, give public links to the photos, or name photos already in your project. The images are saved to your project.

Can I try AI product photography for free?

For a month, yes. The first month of Root's Beginner plan is free and comes with 650 credits, enough for 162 1K Seedream 4.0 product images. After that the plan is $9 a month, and you can cancel whenever you like.
