Midjourney alternative

A Midjourney alternative with many image models

Root makes images with many models from one account and one credit balance, GPT Image, Nano Banana, Seedream and FLUX.2 among them. The 11 in the table below take a style picture next to the prompt. Every image is kept in your project, and the same models run by API. One image starts at $0.02, with Krea 2 Turbo.

Updated

First month free on the Beginner plan, with 650 credits to try any model.

Models that take a style picture

Each of these takes a style picture next to your prompt: a picture whose colour, light or texture you want, rather than its content. The price is for one image at the size shown, with one style picture sent, in dollars. 100 credits is $1.

Krea 2 Large takes style images only, with no reference images. With a style picture, GPT Image is charged on what the model reports it used, so the final charge can differ a little.

Keeping one look across a whole set

  • Wire the same style picture into every image of the set, and keep to one model.
  • Write your house rules once as a prompt template, and pick it from the sparkle button next to any prompt box. The prompt helper then follows them when it drafts or improves a prompt.
  • For a look that has to hold across a long series, train Krea 2 on your own pictures in that style, in the Root app (see the questions below).
  • Every take stays in the project, so you can lay a set out side by side and keep the ones that match.

From one style picture to a set of images

  1. Bring in the style picture. Upload a picture whose look you want to a Root project: a painting, a film still, a photo with the colour you like.
  2. Wire it into the style input. Add an Image Gen node, pick a model from the table above, for example Seedream 4.0 while you try ideas, and connect the picture to the node's style input.
  3. Say what to take from it. Write who or what is in the image, where, and how it is framed. Then say what to take from the style picture, such as its colours, its light or its brushwork, so the model doesn't copy what is in it.
  4. Change the subject, keep the rest. For the next image, change only the words about the subject. The same picture, model and settings keep the set looking like one series.

The same image models from code or from a chat

Every model in the table has an id you can send to Root's API with a prompt, and the image is saved to your project. The image generation API guide lists the ids, the sizes and a sample request.

You can also connect Root to Claude or ChatGPT and ask for images in the chat, on the same balance.

Midjourney alternative questions

What is a good Midjourney alternative?

Root. It runs many image models from one account, and the 11 in the table above take a picture to borrow a style from. An image starts at $0.02 with Krea 2 Turbo, priced before you run it. Every image is kept in your project, and the same models work by API.

Can I give Root a picture to copy the style from?

Yes. Wire it into the style input of an Image Gen node with one of the models in the table above, such as Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana or GPT Image 2. Then write what should be in the new image, and what to take from the picture: its colours, its light, its texture.

Can I train an image model on my own art style?

Yes. Train Krea 2 on at least 15 pictures in your style, in the Root app, for about $4.61 with the default settings, then choose your trained model instead of wiring in a style picture. Training needs the Indie plan ($49/mo) or above. The Krea 2 guide has the steps.

Which image models can I call from my own code?

All the models in the table above, with one API key. The image generation API guide has the model ids, the sizes each one makes and a request you can copy.

Can my images become video shots?

Yes, in the same project. Wire a finished image into a Video Gen node as its first frame, and a video model animates it. The image to video guide compares the models and prices.

Can I put images from two models side by side?

Yes. Images from any model land in the same project as takes, so you can run one prompt on two models and keep the better one. Each image is paid from the same credit balance, and failed runs are not charged.

Can I try these image models for free?

For a month, yes. The first month of Root's Beginner plan is free and comes with 650 credits, enough for 325 Krea 2 Turbo images. After that the plan is $9 a month, and you can cancel whenever you like.
